School Academic Learning Plans (April 6-10)

As you all know, Governor Abbott has extended the school closure time throughout the State of Texas. Our students have already lost three weeks of classroom instruction after a week off for Spring Break. With this new Executive Order to protect the welfare of the entire community, our students are going to miss another four weeks of instruction. In response to this lost face-to-face instruction time, your RLISD teachers and administrative team are making the appropriate adjustments. As we begin this next phase of instruction, you will find much greater structure and guidance. One thing remaining the same, we will have academic packets for all students that can be picked up between 10:30 and 12:30 while we are passing out the free lunches. These packets will be good for one week at a time and will be updated with the new packet before the end of the week. Your teachers will be contacting you by Monday of next week. Each week, they are responsible for speaking with the parent/guardian of each student at least one time per week. Most teachers will be checking in with their kids on a daily basis to help them with any questions that they have about their school work.

All students in PK-2nd will have one assignment per week per subject that will be graded. All students in 3rd-12th grades will have 2 assignments per core subject that must be submitted for grading. Your teachers will also be checking in on you and are required to talk directly with the parent/guardian at least once per week. To help those students who prefer to do the lessons online, Mr. Dutcher, the RLISD Director of Technology, will be rolling out Chromebooks next week for High School students as needed. In addition, we are extending our Internet access here in Travis so that you can come sit in your car in the parking lot in front of the High School to do your online work. We hope to have this done by Monday.

Finally, you can follow the links below to access the Instructional Academic Plan that refers to your students' campus. We are here each day to help if we can so do not feel you are alone. Remember, "Apart We Stand Together"!

Governor Abbott Extends Mandatory School Closure until May 4

As of 2:30 this afternoon, the Governor has extended his mandatory closure of all schools until May 4. The greatest concern at this time is to extinguish the COVID-19 virus as quickly as possible and minimize human loss.

RLISD administrative team have already been discussing this possibility and will be rolling out our extended service plan to our students later this week. Our students health is first and foremost, but we are still in the business of educating our kids. If we cannot have them here in our facilities, we are working on a plan to reach out to them on a regular basis. Thank you for you patience in this very trying time of our society!

Feeding Our Kids

The RLISD team is trying to remain flexible to find the best way to serve our community. We have been serving breakfast at 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 - 12:30 since Tuesday of this week. While the number of lunches being served has gradually grown throughout the week, the number of breakfasts served has remained relatively low with an average of less than 5.

To try to get more food out to our students, our staff will begin handing out breakfast and lunch meals on Monday from 10:30 - 12:30. For two hours, you (child 0-18 must be present) will be able to drive through the HS parking lot near the flagpole to pick up your breakfast and lunch. In short, we will not be serving at 7:30 anymore as it seems too early for most kids. You will have access to that same food and lunch food beginning at 10:30. Yes, they are eligible for both meals at the same time!

While you are there, please feel free to ask for "a packet" of work for you child if you have not done so already. We are still functioning off of the first packet and will update it sometime next week. Please remember and practice my basic rule for learning, "if you do not have something else to do, get out a book and read". Reading is the key to educational success!

How Quickly Things Change

By now, you should have all seen or heard Governor Abbott has passed an Executive Order that addresses many things in our day to day life for the next two weeks. With respect to RLISD, he has directed that all schools with close until Monday, April 6, and that may change depending upon how successful we are in defeating this virus. We will still continue providing daily meals and there is plenty of work still to come for our kiddo's. Keep in mind, this is all current grade level material that they should already know how to do. We just want to keep them sharp by practicing while they are not at school. If they have nothing else, please let them read a book.

Stay healthy and safe,
Dr. B
